Inside the Liberty Wreck
The Cyprus government has decided to invest in scuba diving with a series of wrecks being sunk around the southern coast specifically for scuba divers. The first of these wrecks has been sunk in 2009 and is called the Liberty Wreck.
This is a boat dive as the Liberty wreck was sunk off the coast of the Agia Trias Harbour area in Protaras. It takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the site.
The Liberty now sits in 27 metres of water and we can already see a wealth of fish life being attracted by this artificial reef, including grouper, trigger fish and those strange aquatic beings... Divers!
There is a swim through along the middle of the wreck that divers can easily get through, although a torch is needed and if the wreck is busy, the visibility inside can drop quite drastically.
The Liberty wreck is a great first step for investment in scuba diving on the island of Cyprus and hopefully, it will not be too long before we see more ships being sunk in the same vein.
