2009 has seen the sinking of the first purpose sunk wreck in Cyprus. The 23 metre passenger ferry, the Liberty Wreck is now available to dive by boat, with Deep Inspirations.
At the same time as the Licensing went through for the Liberty, the cargo vessel, Demetrious II was also commisioned for sinking along the West Coast of Cyprus.
The CTO (Cyprus Tourism Organisation) now has plans to sink four more wrecks around the Cyprus coast line for divers to enjoy. These have been guaranteed to be a minimum of 80 metres in length with full penetration available to those divers with the qualifications to do so.
In addition to the 4 wrecks, there are also plans to develop artificial reefs around the island accessible by boat and/or by shore in order to start attracting back the aquatic life that has been somewhat lost due to over fishing.
Plans in the pipeline currently include; ongoing university projects to create replica amphora reefs and a wooden shipwreck.. Equally, the Cyprus Fisheries department is looking into the creation of an artificial reef using concrete blocks.
There is no question that these measures can only improve the diving available in Cyprus and we look forward to these plans being put into action.
